Pergear 25mm f/1.8 (E-mount) - Review / Test Report
Lens Reviews - Sony Alpha/NEX (APS-C)

Introduction

The fancy new lenses from the mainstream manufacturers are always taking the spotlights but while they are very desirable, they are also expensive. However, just next to the spotlights are the shadows - occupied by many small manufacturers that you may not even have heard of. It's probably a safe bet that "Pergear" is one of them. While Sony, Canon and the likes are at the high end of the price spectrum, Pergear is at the other extreme. In this review, we'll have a look at the Pergear 25mm f/1.8 and it sells for as little as $68! Over at Amazon or via the Pergear store, it's available in Fujifilm X, Micro-Four-Thirds and Sony (APS-C) E-mount. Unsurprisingly for a niche player, it's an all manual lens without electronic coupling. The field-of-view is equivalent to a 38mm lens on full format cameras thus it's a moderate wide-angle lens (or a standard lens on Micro-Four-Thirds cameras).

So how much of a lens can you get for that sort of money? As it turned out - quite a bit actually albeit not in size. It's not a pancake lens but it is tiny nonetheless. The lens body is made of metal with either a black or silver finish. The grippy focus- and aperture control rings are very smooth and dampened. However, the focus ring is somewhat mushy with a slight lag in action when switching direction. The aperture ring is click-less thus somewhat more aligned to movie making while photographers have to verify the aperture setting visually rather than "feeling" changes via clicks. However, using a fully manual lens is not about action photography anyway. A barrel-shaped, screw-in, metal lens hood is also part of the package.

Please note that the Pergear 25mm f/1.8 is not related to the probably "better known" 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8 or Meike 25mm f/1.8. Unlike those lenses, the Pergear is based on just 5 lens elements instead of 7.
